In Depowered, a metal surfboard serves as a shattered mirror atop a pile of black volcanic sand. The design references The Silver Surfer, a space-faring superhero comic book created in the late 1960's. The Silver Surfer's philosophical pulp narrative hinges on fantasies of omnipotence, colonialism, loneliness, and the romantic impulse to encompass the universe. The Silver Surfer wields the "Power Cosmic" and his board permits unlimited travel through time, space and hyperspace without expending his own energy.
